Re: Carling Cup - 25/26th Oct

crystal palace at 3/1 with stan james is certainly worth some interest, to beat a liverpoool side who for 60 mins or so were awful at the cottage on saturday. When garcia came on,and they switched cisse to right wing to run at nick jensen, things did get better, and sub-goalie,tony warner pulled off three top-drawer saves. But something about this liverpool side does not seem right, there seems something missing. On staurday's display djimi trore looked as bad a full back as i have seen for ages.

Now palace got the brighton defeat out of their system on saturday, beating the clarets 2-0,and they are sure to give this one a good go,it is a one-off nothing to lose game, and morrison is on fire this season and dougie freedman is still a canny, clever player.I am not sure if andy johnson is quite 100/% yet but as liverpool lost in this cup last season to burnley, who are not a patch on palace at their best,3-1 with stan james will get a fiver of my money at least. The question is whether benitez will take this cup seriously this season. If he puts out a team full of reserves then he will be asking for it in deepest south london

As to my own team fulham, well confidence is starting to return in droves and boa-morte and malbranque were on fire on saturday. But again coleman does not take this competition too seriously, more's the pity,as we should be looking to have a good punt at this one.Again will bryan robson take it seriously, any baggies fans around to comment for us?Perhaps rob earnshaw will start, and he is a player i have always liked since the early cardiff days.

If fulham were to put out a good, full strength side then 4/5 with stan james would be a decent-ish price. But it will all be about team news in this one, good luck one and all.

Re: Carling Cup - 25/26th Oct

Hmm....Gamebookers seem to go higher slightly on a fair few of the home sides.
I agree on Palace but as ever in this competition its all about team news & Johnson hasnt been playing has he.
I think I disagree on Fulham tbh, Toscani, only really because of the team news factor but I think both sides will probably play strong lines ups, or at least only replace like for like. Personally I think Fulham have been poor but you'd know better than me, but the defeat for Albion yesterday must have hurt after missing a twice taken penalty, & the feeling is that theyre just not getting the breaks. I think some of the optimism from the Arsenal win must remain & I can just see albion relaxing tomorrow & playing better. The same could apply for Fulham of course which is why I see this as very unpredictable & I can see any result here tbh, & I think theres easier bets around.

Sunderland are showing a bit of fight & I think if they field a full side against Arsenal, who probably wont, then over 2/1 @ Gamebookers seems fair to me. Theres 2 things that I dont like & that is Arsenal arent as strong as they have been so might he play more first teamers than he would like, & Sunderland entertain Portsmouth saturday which is massive for both clubs.
Wigan could well put 'league domination' first & rest a few which would make Watford worth looking at @ 9/2 B365.
Same with Leeds, depending on Mark Hughes' outlook on his sides upcoming visit to Chelsea, Blackburn may rest a few which make Leeds @ 4/1 decent, but Hughes may also take the opposite view thats hes getting nothing from Stamford Bridge & might as well play his strongest side here.
Norwich might well be worth looking at @ Birmingham who are in trouble & could well be prime for an upset, as could Villa who personally I think will put Burnley away by at least a couple but they took us out last year 3-1 away if my memory serves correct

Re: Carling Cup - 25/26th Oct

I won't be placing a bet on any game until just before kick off when i see for definate exactly how the sides are taking this competition.

Palace were a stand out for me on first sight too. Correct me if im wrong but i remember past few seasons Liverpool putting out very weak sides in the early rounds of this competition?

Wouldn't expect any difference here either. They can't allow some little cup to get in the way of EPL and CL and risk injuries to top players.

Again, same could be said for Arsenal too and backing Sunderland.

Sunderland have been on a bit of form in recent weeks. Winning away to Boro, should have got a point at least against Man Utd and then an epic game yesterday with Newcastle.

Starting to find their feet in this division and Arsenal again, like Liverpool, i wouldnt imagine will be too fussed about this and again i remember them playing very weakened sides although to be fair to them the youngsters that did come in did do very well and got some great results.

For the shorter odds matches i like Newcastle @ 1.58.

Souness is under mass pressure at the minute and a defeat against a lower league side is the last thing he needs at the minute, even if its an inferior cup.

Shearers last season too and he desperately wants a trophy and he may not get a better chance plus the fact they are struggling and a bit off the European places this could help them get that goal.

He won't risk Owen and players that are 50/50 but bar that i'd imagine a pretty decent side put out. It wuld do wonders for the team getting 2 wins on the trot for the first time in a while and it gives them something to work on.

But like i say - no bets until just before kick off.

Re: Carling Cup - 25/26th Oct

No-one fancy Barnet at Old Trafford.

Fresh off the back of a 4-0 thumping at Mansfield.

No?

To prove there are lies, damn lies and statistics our only two comparable results were last seasons games against Exeter.

Man U (h) 0-0 (a) 2-0
Barnet (h) 1-0 (a) 3-0

Still not convinced you?

Well it was worth a try. :loon

Back in the real world Leeds, Norwich, West Ham and Watford must be in with a decent shout. To be honest it all depends on team news.

Norwich @ Birmingham are the one's I like. The home side are in dire straits, their strikers have been mis-firing all season whereas Norwich who aren't going well in the Championship will be well up for this game quite possibly to prove a point after relegation last season.

West Ham @ Bolton - League Cups games always fail to attract the crowds at Bolton, they haven't had a good cup run in years. With the UEFA Cup distraction and Allardyce's main focus always on the league it's difficult to see them coming through especially with one or two injuries. Granted the reserves did a decent job against Besiktas but I think Bolton will field a much weaker team tomorrow. West Ham I'm not sure about Pardew may decide to stick with a winning formula and if they play the first choice back 4 and Benayoun I'd say they should have too much.

Re: Carling Cup - 25/26th Oct

Aston Villa v Burnley
Aston Villa defender Aaron Hughes is ruled out of the Carling Cup match because of a recurring hernia problem.

Hughes will see a specialist so Mark Delaney steps up for his first start of the season after injury and midfielder Gavin McCann also makes the squad.

Burnley manager Steve Cotterill will be without midfielder Micah Hyde as he is serving a one-match ban.

Graham Branch (calf) remains doubtful while Cotterill revealed his squad picked up a few knocks at the weekend.

# Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry:
"If we're not on the ball in terms of effort and commitment then we'll get beaten.

"We should see this competition as a route into Europe. We will be taking it seriously but it will be a tough game."

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill:
"We know what size club we are and we know what we're taking on in Aston Villa.

"We were delighted with our performance last year but that's a year gone and I would imagine the sides will be different now.

"We're under no illusions about how tough a task it will be there."

Blackburn v Leeds
Blackburn defender Ryan Nelsen is struggling to shake off a minor knee injury in time for the Carling Cup tie against Leeds.

Winger David Thompson and striker Matt Jansen are in line for run-outs while forward Craig Bellamy could also start.

On-loan Leeds midfielder Jon Douglas is eligible to face parent club Blackburn but is doubtful with a calf injury.

Fellow midfielder Shaun Derry serves a one-match ban so Gylfi Einarsson and Sean Gregan are pushing for recalls.

# Blackburn manager Mark Hughes:
"Our home form has been good, so we're looking forward to it.

"I believe that cup games can help your league form. I don't view them as a distraction but as a positive."

# Leeds goalkeeper Neil Sullivan:
"It's going to be a big test for us and will show us how far we've come.

"We're going okay and there's no reason why we shouldn't look forward to it.

Fulham v West Brom
Fulham goalkeeper Mark Crossley is sidelined for the Carling Cup tie and faces three weeks out after damaging his hamstring at the weekend.

Claus Jensen (knee), Brian McBride (foot) and Niclas Jensen (rested) are all out but Zat Knight returns.

Chris Kirkland (ribs), Martin Albrechtsen (hamstring) and Steve Watson (groin) are all injury doubts ahead of West Brom's trip to Fulham.

Defender Curtis Davies is cup-tied after playing for previous club Luton.

# Fulham boss Chris Coleman:
"We want to do well in this competition and build on the results we've had.

"We are up against another Premiership team so if we want to do well we will have to field a strong team, it's as simple as that.

"The winner gets into Europe and it's a big incentive for us and reaching a final would be an achievement."

# West Brom number two Nigel Pearson:
"A good cup run can help with confidence. We're going to go out to try to win the game.

"We have got players who might not be available and we've got to look at who can play two games in 48 hours. It is inevitable there will be changes."

Sunderland v Arsenal
Sunderland goalkeeper Ben Alnwick is set to replace Kelvin Davis and Danny Collins returns to the defence for the visit of Arsenal in the Carling Cup.

Unsettled striker Jon Stead will get a start while on-loan Arsenal defender Justin Hoyte has permission to play.

Arsenal captain Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires and Gilberto are likely to be rested for the cup tie.

While Freddie Ljungberg, Alexander Hleb, Jose Antonio Reyes, Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole remain injury doubts.

# Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy:
"Jon Stead was excellent in the reserves. He worked his shift and that's what I saw in him before I brought him here.

"I've had words with him and he was disappointed with his performances. It's refreshing to hear that.

"Now what he has to do is put it into the first team."

# Arsenal striker Thierry Henry on the club's youngsters:
"You don't have a lot of players who arrive at 17 and are successful instantly.

"They have one or two years where they struggle. At that age, I was in and out of the Monaco team and it was hard."

Wigan v Watford
Wigan striker Jason Roberts will sit out the Carling Cup tie after picking up a thigh strain at the weekend.

Mike Pollitt could return in goal while Stephen McMillan, Matt Jackson and Ryan Taylor are all set for starting places as boss Paul Jewell makes many changes.

Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd has a full-strength squad at his disposal for the trip to the JJB Stadium.

Academy duo Francino Francis and Adrian Mariappa will travel after making their debuts earlier in the competition.

# Watford assistant Keith Burkinshaw:
"Nobody expected them to be up there so we'll be up against it but we'll give it a good go.

"It won't be any easier if they have a weakened side because whoever they bring in will have a bit of class."

# Wigan manager Paul Jewell:
"We've got a decent squad and if we get injuries and suspensions then someone's misfortune is an opportunity for somebody else.

"We have got to perform to our optimum in nearly every match to get a result and that takes an awful lot out of us.

"But the players are fit and are full of desire and determination."

Crystal Palace v Liverpool
Steven Gerrard may return for Liverpool after injuring his shin playing for England against Austria.

Reserve team captain David Raven may start at right-back and Darren Potter and Zak Whitbread are set to play with Jamie Carragher expected to be rested.

Crystal Palace are without striker Jon Macken (hamstring), while defender Danny Butterfield (groin) and Winger Jobi McAnuff (ankle) are doubtful.

Macken's absence means Dougie Freedman should play alongside Clinton Morrison.

# Crystal Palace boss Iain Dowie:
"Everyone is looking forward to the match against the European champions.

"We know it will be a massive task but the players and management are up for the challenge."

# Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez:
"Now is the time to be positive and we need now to think about Crystal Palace. I am not talking about priorities.

"Palace are good workers and we know it will be a physical game.

"We want to win all the competitions this season but we will take it one game at a time."

Mansfield v Millwall
On-loan Manchester City midfielder Jonathan D'Laryea has been cleared to play for Mansfield in their Carling Cup third-round tie with Millwall.

Jason Talbot (concussion) Gus Uhlenbeek (dead leg) and Gavin Peers (hamstring) are all pushing for a place.

Millwall are without Ady Williams and Jermaine Wright, who are ineligible under the terms of their loan deals.

On-loan Spurs right-back Phil Ifil serves a one-match ban and left-back Jamie Vincent has a hamstring injury.

# Millwall manager Colin Lee:
"We've such a small squad and life is even more difficult for us when we can't get our strongest team on the pitch.

"Mansfield knocked out Southampton in the previous round, so it will be a very difficult game for us."

Reading v Sheff Utd
Reading defender Chris Makin is doubtful after picking up a knee injury against Stoke while Leroy Lita is definitely out with an ankle problem.

Captain Graeme Murty could return after missing the last four games while John Oster, Stephen Hunt, Eric Obinna and Graham Stack all chase starting places.

Sheffield United will be without striker Vincent Pericard as he is struggling with an ankle injury.

Defender Chris Morgan is suspended but Craig Short is back in contention.

# Reading boss Steve Coppell:
"We've had a big physical test against Stoke and we have another big week coming up.

"I'll certainly make some changes but it's an insult to call them fringe players - I'll play a balanced team."

Doncaster v Gillingham
Doncaster will be without Jonathan Forte for the visit of Gillingham in the Carling Cup after the striker was recalled by Sheffield United.

Defender Simon Marples, who is recovering from a dead leg, faces a late fitness.

Gillingham midfielder Danny Spiller is ruled out after leaving Saturday's defeat at Bradford with a protective cast on his leg.

Neil Harris is cup-tied having played previously for Nottingham Forest.

Chelsea v Charlton
Anybody any ideas whether Mourinho is going to rest players for this game?
Charlton @ 9.00 could be great value especially with the way they have started the season and I would have thought Curbishley would have viewed the carling cup as a good opportunity for them to pick up some silverware this season.
Danny Murphy,Darren Bent and co have been playing out of their skins this season and why Murphy was not in last England squad is baffling.
Be interesting to see the Chelsea starting 11 but I really fancy Charlton to take something from this game and @9.00's it is certainly very tempting to have a small stakes wager on them at that price.

Re: Carling Cup - 25/26th Oct

I'd have to agree Mike. They'll be the argument that even if Chelsea play 11 other players they should still win etc. I dunno i reckon anything could happen. Charlton have been good on the road but its Chelsea their playing. I'd bet Charlton if i was bored and it was on the telly.

Aye come on where's the Doncaster news for dodgy folks?

Usually folks are talking about Watford are they not on Carling Cup threads? . Drew twice with Wigan in the league last season. Are Wigan pretty transformed from last year? I suppose if they was to rest folks it could bring us back to them games of last season. Sod it im taking Watford. It was seeing ex Spurs man Burkinshaw there. I reckon they'll be up for it. Does anyone have a link to match reports for the wigan v Watford games last season?

Oh and does anyone have a picture of a man in a green bowler hat eating a sandwich?

I have to admit, Komp, I'm a little interested in Watford myself. I think they'll have a chance there if Wigan prove to be slightly less motivated. From the official Wigan site:

Quote:
Wigan: Lee McCulloch is suspended for this game, and Jason Roberts is a doubt after picking up a thigh injury against Aston Villa at the weekend. That said, it is widely assumed that Paul Jewell could make wholesome changes to the starting line-up just as he did in the last round against Bournemouth.

Watford: Watford have no suspensions or injuries to report at this moment in time.

That's a bit harsh on the team that's won this cup more more times than any other team Kiko but i know what you mean.

From Lfc.tv

Rafael Benitez has said he will be sending a strong line-up to Selhurst Park for the Carling Cup third round tie at Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.
The Liverpool manager says there is likely to be one or two young players in his squad but he will be using all of his first team squad for this match.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: " We have some options for this match. We have a lot of competitions to play for and this year we have more players in the first team squad.

"We will go to Crystal Palace with a strong team, that is the idea."

I dont think we will lose, certainly not in normal time anyway.
