Pitch Dimensions

Just looking in www.soccerbase.com

I think the pitch size is important and i'd like to see if there is anything in it. Small narrow pitches might not suit a team that likes to get wide and errrr other factors that maybe will come up if we talk about it.

Here's 2 in Scotland for example-

Clyde
Length 112 yards
Width 76 yards

Cowdenbeath
Length 107 yards
Width 64 yards

Surely that affects things? 12yds is 36 feet aint it?

Re: Pitch Dimensions

Larger pitches might lead to more goals possibly. I always get the impression that it is easier to defend on a small pitch.

Re: Pitch Dimensions

aye mibbes Zonker something to think about. More space to play the ball etc I bet you theres more fouls commited on a smaller pitch. Also i reckon better sides play better on bigger pitches. Maybe it levels it all out.

Right styles of play. Thats the next stop. A good way to ask some fans in.

Re: Pitch Dimensions

Surely if you play wingers, youre more suited to a wide pitch ??

Re: Pitch Dimensions

A back 3 would certainly prefer a narrow pitch too I imagine.

I agree with you Komp. At Barnet we've had to narrow the pitch to comply with FL standards and this has totally taken out our left winger who's a shadow of his former self. On pitches away from home he's more effective as he gets to hug the touch line which also creates more room for our runners from midfield (well it did before we stopped attacking ).

Re: Pitch Dimensions

Interesting. Why exactly did you have to narrow the pitch Frodo?

Re: Pitch Dimensions

I think it was either for safety reasons with the pitch very close to the barriers/advertising boards or that the managers techincal area had to be a certain size. I'm pitchside every weekend because I do the photographs for Barnet and it may only be an extra yard or two but it really does make a difference IMO.

Re: Pitch Dimensions

I'm not convinced those figures are right for our pitch as it's meant to be the minimum length/width in the league. Though it's difficult to draw comparisons with those figures when the pitches we've played on this season have all been the same width give or take a yard. Hmmm........

Re: Pitch Dimensions

i was just thinking about how Bristol Rovers have a tiny wee pitch and so do Macclesfield. Maccelsfield have only lost one game on theiir whilst Bristol Rovers havent won any on their I wonder how Macclesfields only conquerors Northampton (1-4) would get on at Bristol Rovers

Re: Pitch Dimensions

From experience playing on big and small parks, large parks definately work in favour of goals. Especially if they have quick nippy attackers as the ball just needs sprayed into corners for them to chase.

Can't stand the smaller parks. Absolute cnut and far too narrow and it ruins the game and makes it tighter as the wingers dont get much joy. Seems to encourage long high balls on the narrow pitches i have found.

Re: Pitch Dimensions

I'm sure the maximum permitted length used to be 120yds - not sure about the minimum. Anybody know the max/min dimensions?

PS
Watched a bit of the Shinty Cup Final on Saturday afternoon and the pitch looked much bigger than a football pitch, certainly lengthwise. Looked about the length of a runway for a jumbo jet.

Re: Pitch Dimensions

Maximum width is exactly the same as the minimum length but the pitch is not allowed to be square.
