Looked about the length of a runway for a jumbo jet.
Any particular runway Para?

Seems like the rules are pretty loose on the pitch size according to wiipedia

i was looking for 'laws of the game'

Re: Pitch Dimensions

in English Div One Gillingham and Portvale have the widest pitches at 77yds. I'd say the nor was about 72 yds across and 115ish long. If the pitch is shorter then it would suit a team witha goalie that can do long kick outs. Plant the ball right up to the danger areas. Even more so on windy days.

Re: Pitch Dimensions

I disagree with Kiko's view that narrow pitches encourage less football. The fact that there is less space to just whack the ball into for people to run on to means that it encourages people to actually play football instead.

Incidently, I think Arsenal's is one of the narrowest and they play more football than any other team in England so that backs it up.

And also incidently, their pitch has a special dispensation from UEFA which allows them to play in european matches even though their pitch is smaller than the standard set for these competitons. This is in recognition of the fact that nothing can be done to overcome the problem.

The pitch at their new stadium will have to be bigger. Will this cause them a problem? Given that they have to play half their matches away anyway, I'd say no.

I did say from experience ODM meaning the sides i have played for which are in no way the same class as Arsenal

Arsenal are one very gifted technical football side. There aren't many others like them around, especially in the lower leagues where the qualty gets less and less.

When ive played we have tried to play football, as have the other sides but at times it gets too packed, especially in midfield which means then resorting to long balls seems the right idea.

All depends on team formations also. If you have two teams playing 4-5-1 on a narrow pitch, not much football is going to end up being played.

Re: Pitch Dimensions

Not sure if this is still correct but I'm sure I remember reading a long time ago that you can fit 2 minimum sized football pitches sidesways on a maximum sized pitch.

Re: Pitch Dimensions

Thinking back from experience as I used to mark them out for a living, although I havent got my old book to hand, I would say Frodo is correct about the technical area. I cant remember the sizes but I think its a set size around the dugout, & obviously if the dugout is not set into the stand then the area in question will stand out more proud than if it was set into the stand. There also has to be a minimum distance between the technical area & the touchline as there has to be a certain distance for the linesman to run through.
If I remember rightly Wolves certainly used to have the largest available playing area in England but they never used it all. The left hand side from the home end was always miles from the pitch seemingly.
There may also be a rule regarding minimum distance for throw ins, as in advertising hoardings. Remember Tranmere used to leave gaps for Challinor (??) to launch it miles

Re: Pitch Dimensions

Seen teams getting into bother for changing the size of their pitch swooper. Think Aberdeen used to do it a lot but i could be wrong.

The touchline paint must be not less than 50cm's btw. I had to mention it

Re: Pitch Dimensions

Its a lot easier to change pitch sizes now Komp, with the advances of paint manufacturers.
Obviously lime used to be used which would scorch the pitch so making it obvious where the lines had been, & also in certain cases diesel & creosote.....these are all now banned. Lime was banned after Andy Dibble was scorched by the ball bouncing & spraying lime into his face.
Multi sport venues will use specially formulated stuff that will last for a short period of time whilst very bright & then be broken down so allowing the rugby league pitch to be marked for the following day

Re: Pitch Dimensions

I used to like doing bets on corners over 11/under 11 on live matches ,does anyone else think that narrower pitches would result in less corners .No room for the wingers to get passed the fullbacks.A few years ago I made a fair bit of money on Man U in Europe on corners if Giggs played they were over, if he wasn't it was under. Did not work last season though .
