Could be interested in Southampton. Strong at home (8-5-1), not the best h2h (22-22-31), but the last eight 8-2-0, won all home games. Owls with some problems in defence, sold Bougherra to Charlton, could play with a teenager in first squad.

Madjid Bougherra has completed his £2.5million move to Charlton, while fellow central defenders Richard Wood (ankle) and Graham Coughlan (jaw) are both doubts for the midweek trip to the St Mary's Stadium.

Owls manager Brian Laws has no qualms about handing the 6ft 4in Beevers, 17, his first senior start.

"He's young, talented and has certainly got a great chance in football. Maybe this is the time to test him out," Laws told the club's official website.

"It's away from home, he won't have 29,000 home supporters there. His adrenalin will be pumping and maybe it's the best option for him.

"I can see he's not over-awed by going into the team. He is mentally and physically strong enough and he has the frame to go with it, so that is a major plus."

I'd want a bit bigger than th 1.72 showing there to look into this any more as I dont really like Southampton as a betting prospect yet.

NEWELL'S INJURY LIST GROWS
Manager Mike Newell has virtually a whole team out injured for tomorrow night's clash at the Ricoh Arena, as he counts the cost to his squad after Saturday's FA Cup defeat against Blackburn.

Kevin Foley (heel), Matthew Spring (calf) and Club skipper Chris Coyne (knee) are the latest players on the treatment table, bringing the number of players lost to injury up to six in the last three games - which took place over just an eight day period.

Foley is giving his Manager particular cause for concern, as his troublesome heel injury has now become a persistent worry for the Ireland U21 defender.

Newell said: "There's a growing injury list and to a club with a squad the size of ours that's no use at all."
After the Hatters' cup exploits dominated the news last week, it's now time to turn our attention firmly back to life in the Championship, and the games are coming too fast for Newell to get his crocked players ready for action, at the moment.

Markus Heikkinen has stepped up training but is not expected to be fit until the visit of Norwich City on February 10.

Newell added: "Coyney has no chance and Kevin Foley is very doubtful as well.

"Anyone who saw the game on Saturday will have seen that he (Foley) wasn't at his best, so the injury is obviously having more of an effect than we would want.

"Maybe he just needs to rest and let it settle down."

There was some relief, however, as Matthew Spring's injury, which occurred during the warm-up on Saturday, seems to be improving by the day.

"He had a calf injury and didn't want to risk it, but we're expecting him to be fit for tomorrow."

Ahmet Brkovic is still on crutches after being forced off the pitch in the 1-0 win over QPR last Tuesday night, and will definitely miss the Coventry game.

"He's miles away. He was on crutches over the weekend just to keep the weight off it. I'm not expecting him to be fit before Saturday."

Leon Barnett and Warren Feeney both damaged medial ligaments in their knees during the 2-0 home defeat to Barnsley, ruling them out of contention for this week's games. Both players have just begun light training, though, and will be looking to step it up providing there's no reaction later in the week.

"They've done little bits of straight line jogging. They've both got similar injuries to medial ligaments so we can rule them out for tomorrow and Saturday."

Drew Talbot is available for selection, although the Manager may decide that five games in seventeen days may be pushing it for a player who's not had too much football since he missed the whole of last season with a back injury.

Luton will travel to Coventry tomorrow hoping to extend the Sky Blues' nine match winless streak, which included a 3-1 defeat at Kenilworth Road in December.

"They are in a similar sort of position to us so it will be a very difficult game. It's a big game and we just have to go there and get something out of it.

The only consolation for Luton is a similar selection problem for freefalling Coventry, who are without a win in nine games.

The Sky Blues are missing captain Robert Page and vice-skipper Michael Doyle after the duo clashed on the training ground.

Doyle had to undergo dental repair work after the incident while Page had to have hospital treatment on an injured hand.

Coventry, under the guidance of temporary manager Adrian Heath following the sacking of boss Mickey Adams, are also missing Elliott Ward and today sold leading goalscorer Stern John to Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

They have brought in Colin Hawkins from Shelbourne and are also chasing another defender ahead of the clash.

Barnsley v QPR
Defender Neil Austin is expected to return to Barnsley's squad for the midweek home match with QPR.

The 23-year-old has been sidelined with a groin injury since the FA Cup draw at Southend earlier this month.

Manager Simon Davey has a fully-fit squad to choose from with no new injury or suspension problems.

Davey is not expected to make too many changes from the side that picked up three crucial points at Luton last time out.

The Tykes manager must decide whether to retain Antony Kay alongside skipper Paul Reid at the heart of defence or recall young Rob Atkinson.

Striker Marc Richards, who recently turned down a move to Port Vale, is expected to partner Daniel Nardiello up front.

New signing Adam Bolder is set to make his debut for QPR.

The 26-year-old signed from Derby at the weekend and looks likely to go straight into the Hoops' midfield.

Boss John Gregory could be further boosted by the availability of Gareth Ainsworth.

He made a comeback last week after two months out with an ankle injury, managing six minutes in Tuesday's FA Cup third round replay defeat to Luton, and could be in line to start against the Tykes.

Stefan Bailey is suspended following his red card against the Hatters for a horror-tackle on Ahmet Brkovic, which sparked an unseemly 20-man shoving match. Also out are injured duo Martin Rowlands (calf) and Marcus Bignot (knee).

Birmingham striker Rowan Vine is set to make his debut against Southend at St Andrews on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old is yet to feature for the Blues after their games against Leeds and Leicester were postponed and he was cup-tied for Saturday's FA Cup defeat to Reading.

On-loan Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner is in contention for a return to Steve Bruce's starting line-up after making an appearance from the bench against the Royals, following an ankle injury.

Former-Tottenham midfielder Stephen Clemence was left out of the squad against Reading after recovering from a calf injury, but he may feature.

Colchester have returned from their three-day training break to Spain without any fresh injury concerns ahead of their clash with fellow promotion hopefuls Preston.

Striker Jamie Cureton is Layer Road boss Geraint Williams' only injury worry ahead of the U's first match in ten days.

The 31-year-old striker, who has hit 14 goals this season, had been suffering from a slight hamstring strain but is expected to return to the squad.

Young West Ham forward Hogan Ephraim, who has extended his loan spell from Upton Park until the end of the season, is on standby to partner Chris Iwelumo in attack should Cureton fail make it.

On-loan Manchester City defender Matthew Mills could handed a debut after his move was rubber-stamped on Friday.

Swindon-born Mills began his career at Southampton, before joining City for #250,000 just under a year ago. He has also served Coventry and Bournemouth on loan, but has only made two first-team appearances for City so far.

Andy Lonergan looks set to keep his place in goal for Preston.

Lonergan was drafted in after Carlo Nash publicly stated his desire to leave the club and he kept a clean sheet in the 2-0 FA Cup win over Crystal Palace, which earned them a lucrative fifth-round tie with Manchester City.

Danny Dichio (dead leg) and Jason Jarrett (groin) are doubts, while Patrick Agyemang (hip) and Joe Anyinsah (cartilage) are definitely out.

Callum Davidson could return from a hamstring injury, while striker Neil Mellor could make his league debut after coming on for the last three minutes against Palace.

Speaking about Davidson on the club's official website, manager Paul Simpson said: ``Callum may have a chance for Tuesday, we will probably take him with us, with the physio being down there we can treat him.

Coventry v Luton
Caretaker manager Adrian Heath has hinted Maltese international Michael Mifsud could make his first start for Coventry when Luton visit the Ricoh Arena.

Stern John's departure to Championship rivals Sunderland could open the door for Mifsud, who has made substitute appearances in the Sky Blues' last two league encounters.

``With Stern leaving, there is a good chance that Michael could come in for us,'' Heath told the club's official website. ``He scored a fantastic goal against Plymouth and everyone has been impressed with his confidence and energy in training.''

Dele Adebola and Kevin Kyle will also be vying for a starting berth as fellow striker Leon McKenzie has only recently resumed light training following a virus.

Andy Marshall is also back in training after a knee operation but this game comes too soon for him, along with Elliott Ward (hamstring) and Colin Cameron (Achilles).

However, Marshall could be back in contention for the weekend trip to Sunderland.

Leeds assistant manager Gus Poyet could make a shock return to action.

Manager Dennis Wise insists he will not be pushing former Chelsea team-mate Poyet into a playing role at Elland Road, despite the 39-year-old Uruguayan featuring in two friendly matches in Cyprus last week.

But Wise will not be picking from a full-strength squad and could be tempted to include Poyet, who scored with a blistering volley in Leeds' 1-1 draw with local side Ethnikos Achas in Cyprus, if he decides to register as a player in time.

Norwich manager Peter Grant is facing a defensive crisis ahead of the Coca-Cola Championship visit of Wolves.

Dion Dublin picked up an ankle injury in the weekend's 1-1 FA Cup draw with League One side Blackpool and Jason Shackell is still out with an ankle injury of his own, so Carl Robinson is set to be employed as an emergency centre-half against Mick McCarthy's men.

The Welsh international midfielder filled in alongside Gary Doherty for the last half an hour at Bloomfield Road and is set to be deployed at the back from the start at Carrow Road.

That should see a return to the starting line-up for youngster Robert Eagle in place of Robinson in midfield, as first-choice replacement Andy Hughes is also sidelined with a knock.

Striker Chris Brown sits out with a one-match suspension after marking his full debut for the Canaries with a red card at Blackpool so Paul McVeigh will partner Darren Huckerby in attack, while captain Adam Drury plays his last game before starting a one-match ban.

Top scorer Robert Earnshaw is out until at least April with a groin injury while winger Luke Chadwick is not expected back in training for a month after his knee injury.

Recent recruit Andy Keogh is likely to make his Wolves debut.

Stoke v Ipswich
Stoke are set to be without Andy Griffin and Dominic Matteo when they return to Championship action against Ipswich at the Britannia Stadium.

Full-back Griffin was withdrawn just two minutes into the second half of Saturday's 3-0 FA Cup defeat at Premiership side Fulham with an ankle injury and is almost certain to miss the clash with the Tractor Boys.

Andy Wilkinson will deputise, while Matteo is a doubt with a groin injury and is set to be replaced in midfield by Salif Diao, who was on the bench at Craven Cottage in his first appearance since returning until the end of the season from Liverpool.

Defender Clint Hill is still out with a knee injury while youngster Rob Garrett has joined League Two side Wrexham on a month-long loan deal.

Acting skipper Richard Naylor is a fitness concern for Jim Magilton's Ipswich.

Naylor suffered a badly bruised toe in the 1-0 FA Cup win over Swansea on Saturday and is rated a doubtful starter.

Sunderland v Crystal Palace
Sunderland boss Roy Keane could hand debuts to Stern John and Danny Simpson for the visit of Crystal Palace.

Striker John arrived from Coventry on a two-and-a-half-year deal on Monday, while defender Simpson joined from Manchester United last week and is on loan until the end of the season.

John is more likely to feature than Simpson, who may miss out due to a lack of match practice.

Teenager Anthony Stokes is hoping to shrug off the groin strain which forced him to miss the 4-2 win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Defenders Kenny Cunningham and Stephen Wright came through 90 minutes in Wednesday's 1-0 friendly win over Hibernian.

The pair are not likely to be risked and midfielder Graham Kavanagh (knee) remains sidelined.

Crystal Palace boss Peter Taylor may make changes after Saturday's 2-0 home defeat against Preston in the FA Cup.

New signing Dave Martin, who joined from Ryman League outfit Dartford last week, is available to make his debut, though he is unlikely to start.

I had a look at Hull-Leeds, and was interested in the home side. But on thinking some more - decided against it. Without Fagan and Barmby, I'm a bit concerned about their ability going forward. Leeds do concede goals, but a couple of new boys in - best to wait and watch here.

The closest to a selection of the games I did look at was Sunderland - Palace. Sunderland have a bit of extra rest. the indications are that Whitehead will return to a midfield role - I think that might see a significant improvement from Sunderland. He's the skipper, and an inflential player in his own right. Stokes, Connoly and John upfront - Sunderland should be able to convert more chances. The odds were a bit below what I would be willing to get involved with - because Palace are a pretty solid side, in a good run themselves (though I think the wheels have come off a bit. They were outplayed by both Hull and Preston at home, recently).

Derby-Burnley. The EH-1 is tempting, always - with Derby. But Burnley have signed a couple of useful players. Fitness wise, they should be a bit above the others in coming weeks. Enough to turn me off, there.The under looks a decent bet, but with a fitness edge and the likes of Gudjonson joining the squad, I'm turned off by that too.

Barnsley-QPR, two sides that are a bit difficult to read. I think Barnsley have got better. QPR are in a strange little patch. Some of their football hasn't been too bad - but the results have been terrible. I expect goals here, but not getting involved on that myself, either.

Birmingham - Southend. I won't chase those odds. Not sure about the handicap either.

Coventry - Luton. Two of the worst sides in the league, the -.5 handicap was more than I was expecting, so not getting involved once more.

Norwich - Wolves. I thought about the visitors. Dublin out to add to the injury woes and it looks like a makeshift CB will be in place, here. Wolves took a hammering - no charector in a derby. That does not bode well for them.
