Re: C-C League One 24-26th Nov

I know Rotherham are going pretty well, but 2.3 for the Gills, when we've won 5 of the last 6 at home in the league (with the only defeat coming against Forest) looks a bit too big to me. Will post team news, etc. later in the week.

Re: C-C League One 24-26th Nov

Just having a quick look at the friday games, at first look i like the look of the Unders in the Cheltenham game, looks like an early season relegation dogfight which neither team will want to lose.
Tranmere look a little over-priced with Chris Greenacre in goalscorig form over the last couple of games. Blackpool have just done a league and cup double over Huddersfield but were lucky to beat Northampton in the away game before that according the the bbc.

any thoughts on these chaps?

Re: C-C League One 24-26th Nov

Without examining form or anything these are my first thoughts.

Tranmere are going well and should beat Blackpool. Tranmere have John Thompson on loan from Forest and have won all 4 games since he joined. He's decided to stay with them for an extra month I read earlier today.

I wouldn't touch the Gillingham vs Rotherham game. Gillingham are in form but Rotherham would be a play off pushing side if they didn't have the 10pts deducted at the beginning of the season.

Forest are too short considering their worst results have been at home this season.

Cheltenham v Brentford
Cheltenham striker Steve Guinan misses Friday's Whaddon Road clash against Brentford as he begins a three-match suspension after Town decided not to appeal against his FA Cup sending off at Scunthorpe.

Guinan received a red card 10 minutes from the end of Tuesday's first round replay defeat for a late tackle on Iron defender Cliff Byrne.

``We have looked closely at the video replays and spoken to the match referee (Colin Webster) and as a result we do not feel an appeal would be successful,'' said Robins boss John Ward. ``Therefore, we must take the consequences.''

Captain John Finnigan is likely to miss out once again with a heel injury but there could be a place in the squad for Jamie Victory after the defender resumed training following a persistent pelvic problem.

Mickey Bell (Achilles) and Steven Gillespie (fractured leg) remain sidelined as Ward resumes control of first team affairs from assistant manager Keith Downing after a minor knee operation last week.

Simon Cox is pushing for a place in the Brentford team after joining the Bees on loan from Reading.

The 19-year-old midfielder impressed during a similar spell at Griffin Park earlier in the season, but that period was curtailed prematurely due to injury.

Caretaker-boss Scott Fitzgerald, in charge following the sacking of Leroy Rosenior last weekend, is likely to be without Matt Heywood, who is still struggling with a hamstring injury.

Heywood's fellow centre-back Adam Griffiths, meanwhile, plays his final game before beginning a one-match suspension after picking up his fifth booking of the season in the 4-0 home defeat by Crewe.

Forwards Calum Willock (fractured eye socket) and Lloyd Owusu (groin) remain long-term injury casualties as Brentford seek their first victory for 12 League One matches.

Tranmere v Blackpool
Tranmere manager Ronnie Moore is still without Kevin Ellison for the visit of Blackpool.

The winger is still sidelined with an ankle problem and Steve Davies is set to continue on the left flank.

Striker Calvin Zola is back doing light training but is unlikely to return from his foot injury.

Full-back Robbie Stockdale was on the bench for the 1-0 win at Brighton last weekend after being sidelined for several weeks with a hamstring problem but defender Carl Tremarco (ankle) and midfielder Stephen Jennings (knee) are still out.

Defender John Thompson had been due to return to Nottingham Forest after the clash with the Seasiders but has now signed for another month.

Moore said: ``We were very keen to keep hold of John. He has done very well since he has been here and is a good footballing defender. He has settled in well at Prenton Park and we are delighted he agreed to stay with us for another month.''

Blackpool striker Ben Burgess is pushing for a place in Simon Grayson's starting line-up.

The 25-year-old came on as a substitute in the Seasiders' last match against Huddersfield and he felt no ill effects after returning from a hamstring injury.

Three players will be walking the disciplinary tight rope though as midfield trio Keith Southern, Wes Hoolahan and David Fox are just one booking away from single match bans.

Defender Carl Dickinson has now returned to his parent club Stoke and forward Matt Blinkhorn has been offloaded to League Two side Bury, but apart from that Grayson has no other injury worries to contend with as he looks to extend Blackpool's unbeaten run to 10 games.

Re: C-C League One 24-26th Nov

Cheltenham vs Brentford

The two clubs have three wins in 33 outings between them and the importance of tonight's game can not be understated even at such an early stage of the campaign.

The Bee's sole success in 16 attempts came on penalties against Northampton Town after a goalless Johnstone's Paint encounter at Sixfields mid-October.

Their last league victory was at the beginning of September when they defeated Bradford City (2-1) at Griffin Park.

Brentford haven't scored in three matches, conceding seven while dropping into the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, the Robins' 3-2 Jonstone's Paint win over Barnet was five games back and the impressive three points collected at Yeovil, which ended a six-game losing streak, seem a long time ago now.

Nine games at Whaddon Road have produced three wins and six defeats for Ward, and improving on the eight goals mustered at home will be high on the manager's wish list.

Cheltenham though, bottom in the table on goals scored, are rated the favourites and considered a 5/4 option to make home advantage count this evening.

Brentford, who have only won once (at Northampton in the opening week of the season, 1-0) and conceded 15 goals on their travels, are marked up as a 15/8 punt. A draw is priced 11/5.

http://www.cheltenhamtownfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/News/NewsDetail/0,,10434~932940,00.html

Am having a go on the unders in this game, Cheltenham have only scored once in their last 4 homes and Brentford once in their last 4 aways.

I expect Brentford to be desperate not to lose this game and therefore will try to keep it tight at the back

Re: C-C League One 24-26th Nov

I see a couple of people on here fancy Tranmere, to be honest I was more inclined to go with Blackpool Tranmere have won their last 3 in the league, but they were home to Bournemouth and Millwall (2nd and 3rd worst away sides in the division) and away to Brighton (3rd worst home side in the division), so all pretty weak sides. Blackpool close to full strength, and 4-2-0 for their last 6 games, with a win away to Crewe seeming particularly impressive. They've drawn the last 3 H2Hs here at Prenton Park. Could be tempted by the Blackpool DNB at 2.5.

Hmm, looking at the H2H, Blackpool's only ever win at Prenton Park was in 1978/79, the overall record here is 10-4-1 in favour of Tranmere.

Seems Blackpool have been strengthening their squad a fair bit too this week, signing 3 new players, including Gareth Farrelly.

Yeah - I have gone off Tranmere too RC.

Both teams have impressive recent form so I'm leaving this well alone. Good luck to you though.

Is Jbgb around? What do you reckon to Chesterfield's chances this weekend (well, more to the point, Crewe's chances)? Crewe are a strong home side, and set to name an unchanged side from the one that thrashed Brentford 4-0 last week. Chesterfield without top scorer Caleb Folan.

Crewe v Chesterfield

I was leaning towards Crewe myself Rc but I just can't justify backing them at odds on. Yeah they did pump Brentford 4-0 last weekend, but Brentford truly are shit.

Crewe had 12 senior players out at one point but the situation is getting better. It seems joint top goal scorer Maynard has just resumed training. Although I reckon Rodgers will get the nod alongside Varney up front. Rodgers played last week, didn't score but set-up 2 of the goals. Basically it looks like Dario Gradi will keep the same team as last week.

Caleb Folan is top scorer for Chesterfield and does miss the game through suspension. Folan has scored 6 of Chesterfields 24 league goals this season. An important player but Chesterfield are obviously capable of scoring without him.

With the exception of Folan, Chesterfield will be pretty much full strength.

I'd want 2.0 for Crewe here, and I'm not confident enough in Chesterfield to risk X2 or AH.

I literally have no bets for Saturday

Re: C-C League One 24-26th Nov

Bradford v Bournemouth
Defenders Richard Edghill and Ben Parker will both return to the Bradford squad.
Full-back Edghill was forced out of the recent home defeat to Brighton with a hip injury and missed last week's reverse at Oldham while Parker, on loan from Leeds, has missed the last two matches due to a hamstring strain.

Fellow loanee, Derby winger Lee Holmes, is still struggling with an ankle injury and is not expected to be included in the squad.

Winger Jermaine Johnson is expected to be recalled to the starting line-up in place of on-loan Tommy Black.

Johnson was dropped to the substitutes' bench last week following a recent dip in form reflected throughout the team.

But Black, drafted in from Crystal Palace in time to make his debut at Oldham, is not fully match fit and endured a difficult start to his stint at Valley Parade, being substituted before half-time.

Bournemouth look likely to be without former England international Darren Anderton.

The veteran midfielder is set to miss his first game since he joined the Cherries after aggravating a groin injury against Carlisle last weekend.

Simon Gillett could therefore be handed a debut after joining from Southampton, and loan deadline-day signing Matthew Connolly from Arsenal will also be in the squad.

Callum Hart and Warren Cummings (both leg) are out, and although Marcus Browning (calf), Shaun Cooper and Eddie Howe (both knee) are back in training they are unlikely to be risked by manager Kevin Bond.

Stephen Cooke is also out with a groin problem and on-loan winger Lionel Ainsworth is nursing a tight hamstring, but Karl Broadhurst could return

Crewe v Chesterfield
Crewe are set to have an unchanged line-up.
Midfielder Tony Grant has been ill this week and may lose his place on the bench, while strikers Luke Varney and Rodney Jack and defender Billy Jones are expected to overcome minor niggles picked up in the 4-0 win at Brentford.

Defenders Darren Moss (hernia) and Julien Baudet (hamstring) and striker Nicky Maynard (hamstring) are back in light training but are not likely to be involved.

Skipper Neil Cox (calf) and midfielder Michael O'Connor are still out for the clash with the Spireites.

Alex assistant boss Neil Baker said: ``Chesterfield have had a similar kind of season to ourselves. They've taken some major scalps in the league cup but then went out to a non-league side in the FA Cup.

``It's consistency but they can certainly say the same about us.''

Chesterfield's leading scorer Caleb Folan is suspended.

The nine-goal striker collected his fifth yellow card of the campaign in last week's home win over Cheltenham and must serve a one-match ban at Gresty Road.

His absence opens the door for either Colin Larkin or Wayne Allison to partner fit-again Paul Shaw up front. Shaw ended an eight-week lay off through injury against the Robins after overcoming knee and foot problems.

Phil Picken (knee ligaments) is in contention to start after building on his substitute appearance against Cheltenham with 90 minutes for the reserves in midweek.

Former club captain Shane Nicholson has agreed a loan deal at League Two promotion hopefuls Lincoln - the club where he began his professional career almost 20 years ago.

Carlisle v Port Vale
Ipswich rookie James Krause is in line to make his Carlisle debut.
The 19-year-old left-sided defender has joined the Cumbrians in a two-month loan deal, but may have settle for a place on the bench despite Peter Murphy and Zigor Aranalde both currently being on four yellow cards this term.

United boss Neil McDonald has received another boost after Stoke winger Kevin Harper agreed to extend his stay for another two months.

Harper has also shrugged off a dead leg and should retain his place in the starting XI as Carlisle seek to further enhance their promotion credentials.

Midfielder Paul Murray remains sidelined with a knee injury and Danny Livesey will again deputise for David Raven (hip) but McDonald has no other injury or suspension concerns.

Port Vale boss Martin Foyle is expected to hand a debut to on-loan defender Clayton Fortune.

The 24-year-old, who had a spell at the club last season, was brought in from Leyton Orient to relieve Vale's limited options at the back.

Foyle told the club's official website: ``We are struggling for defenders at the moment. Jason (Talbot) is out with a broken rib, Colin Miles is on three bookings along with Richard Walker and George Pilkington is on four bookings.

``With so many games coming up I thought it was important we brought somebody in.''

Miles limped off in the last game but he has now returned to full fitness and is expected to line up at Brunton Park.

Doncaster v Brighton
Neil Sullivan will go straight into the Doncaster squad with a view to making his debut.
The Leeds goalkeeper signed on loan in time and manager Sean O'Driscoll must decide whether to stick with 20-year-old Ben Smith or start with the experienced former Scotland international.

Fellow goalkeepers Jan Budtz (groin) and Alan Blayney (elbow) are all unavailable, while Andy Warrington has moved to League Two Bury on loan

Defender Steve Roberts has trained as usual and is expected to play despite sustaining a facial injury in last week's draw at Millwall and James Coppinger should also be available after illness and injury.

O'Driscoll is expected to pick his starting line-up, with few changes if any, from much the same squad after Brian Stock extended his loan deal from Preston for a further month.

But Rovers are hoping international clearance comes through in time for new midfield signing Mark Wilson to be added.

On-loan Brighton striker Dean Bowditch is struggling to be fit.

The Ipswich youngster, who has agreed to extend his loan spell on the south coast by a further month, suffered a groin injury in training earlier this week and is a major doubt.

Rookie midfielder Tommy Fraser should keep his place if Bowditch fails to recover, although new winger Alistair John could be handed an immediate debut following his loan deadline-day switch from Charlton.

Centre-half Georges Santos should be available after an ankle injury and midfielder Richard Carpenter is back in training following a groin tear, although he will be short of match fitness.

Utility-man Gary Hart is making progress following a leg injury but is still some way short of a return, while midfielders Charlie Oatway (ankle) and Paul Reid (knee) remain long-term absentees.

Gillingham v Rotherham
Gillingham manager Ronnie Jepson has a few selection posers to deal with.
Centre-back Leon Johnson is fully fit after the knee problem which led to him being left on the bench in the 3-1 defeat at Bristol City last weekend, but with Brent Sancho, Ben Chorley and Ian Cox also competing for a start at the heart of defence, he may have to settle for a place on the bench again.

Jepson must also decide who plays in attack, with Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu and Dean McDonald waiting in the wings if the much sought-after Matt Jarvis reverts to a role on the wing after starting in attack at Ashton Gate.

Alan Pouton will also be hoping to reclaim his place in midfield, but Jepson has no major injury concerns as his side look for a fourth home win on the spin.

Rotherham are missing midfielders Lee Williamson and Michael Keane.

Williamson broke a toe in the FA Cup first-round defeat against Peterborough while Keane sustained a hamstring injury in the same game.

The pair missed last week's 1-1 draw against leaders Nottingham Forest and remain sidelined.

Club skipper Colin Murdock also missed the Forest game with a hip injury but a scan has revealed no serious problem and he could come back into contention.

Defender Gregor Robertson is fully fit again after a knee injury but long-serving Paul Hurst is expected to retain his place.

Robertson also fell ill with a chest infection earlier this week, which forced him to pull out of a midweek reserve game, but he will be available at Priestfield.

Northampton v Leyton Orient
Jason Crowe is suspended and Chris Doig a major injury doubt ahead for Northampton.
Crowe sits out with a one-match ban after collecting five yellow cards and fellow defender Doig is struggling with an ankle injury and will be assessed before kick-off.

Northern Ireland international James Quinn came off during the FA Cup win at Grimsby with an Achilles problem but should be available, while fellow forward Andy Kirk is expected to return from the ankle injury which sidelined him in midweek.

New loan signing Nick Wright will probably be named on the bench, and midfielder Joe Burnell should shake off a calf injury he suffered at Blundell Park.

Sam Aiston (ankle), Fred Murray (Achilles) and Brett Johnson (hamstring) are still missing.

Luke Guttridge and James Walker are likely to make their Leyton Orient debuts after joining the club on loan from Southend and Charlton respectively.

Midfielder Guttridge made the short trip to Brisbane Road after falling out of favour at Roots Hall, and he is expected to take his place in Martin Ling's starting XI, while striker Walker may have to settle on the bench.

But Ling could be without Donny Barnard and Justin Miller for the trip to Sixfields.

Barnard is struggling with a hamstring problem and is rated doubtful for the clash against John Gorman's team, while fellow defender Miller has a groin injury and is given no more than a 50-50 chance of recovering.

Defender Adam Tann remains unavailable as he is recovering from surgery after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Midfielder Michael Simpson (knee) is likely to miss the rest of the season, and young forward Efe Echanomi is still recovering from a broken ankle

Nottm Forest v Millwall
Nottingham Forest manager Colin Calderwood has his fingers crossed strikers Nathan Tyson and Junior Agogo will return to availability.
Calderwood has withdrawn the pair from training this week as a precautionary measure after Agogo complained of a stomach muscle problem while Tyson, who made his comeback this month from medial knee ligament damage, has picked up a minor groin injury.

Should either miss out, fellow frontman Scott Dobie is ready to step into the breach after overcoming long-term hip troubles.

But the Reds chief is confident the duo can play some part against the Lions alongside defender John Curtis, who has also been excused training this week thanks to a groin niggle of his own.

Striker Chris Zebroski will be on the sidelines for Millwall.

The former Plymouth player must serve a one-match ban after picking up his fifth booking of the season in the FA Cup win over Havant & Waterlooville on November 13.

Willie Donachie has little good news on the injury front as he prepares to take charge of his first game since being made Millwall manager permanently earlier this week.

Donachie is still without a number of key players. Defenders Tony Craig (shoulder) and Mark Phillips (appendix) remain absent along with midfielders Jody Morris (knee) and Neal Ardley (hernia) and forward Tom Brighton (ankle).

Donachie could hardly have wished for a tougher debut; the Lions have won away from home just twice this term, and face a Forest team six points clear at the top of the division.

Yeovil v Scunthorpe
Yeovil wait on the fitness of three key players ahead of the top of the table clash.
Talismanic skipper and central defender Terry Skiverton (ankle), utility player Paul Terry (leg) and attacking midfielder Arron Davies (unspecified) are all facing a race to be fit for fifth placed Yeovil.

All three hoped to return to training on Thursday and could figure on Saturday if fit.

The Glovers are still without central defender Scott Guyett, who completes his three-match suspension following Saturday's match, but are boosted by on-loan Southampton centre back Martin Cranie, who debuted in last week's goalless draw at Orient.

And Crainie's Saints team-mate Leon Best is in line to make his debut after completing a loan deal until January 2 on Thursday.

Scunthorpe defender Andy Crosby is expected to be fit.

Crosby was forced out of the midweek FA Cup replay win over Cheltenham with a hamstring strain, but could still make the starting line-up, although Cliff Byrne is on stand-by.

Winger Ian Morris is nursing a knee injury sustained in last week's league win over Northampton and if he fails a late fitness test Robbie Foy will stand in again.

Veteran striker Steve Torpey is still struggling with knee ligament damage, while summer signing Ramon Calliste is continuing his rehabilitation following his fractured ankle dislocation sustained in a pre-season friendly.

Midfielder Jim Goodwin, striker Daniel McBreen and defenders Andy Butler and Lee Ridley are all hoping to play some part after failing to make the starting line-up in recent weeks.

Re: C-C League One 24-26th Nov

Bradford and bournemouth have been in bad form of late. I was looking at Bournemouth as theyve been knocking the ball about well at the moment is seems but with no real cutting edge upfront. Missing anderton and Bradford possibly just having a bit of a bad run but more than capable on their day makes me avoid this one.

Oldham look to be playing well. I havent posted the soccernet preview up for that for some reason. I need to look at how Huddersfield have been playing but to me their always a bit suspect at home. Maybe i might just go for the over 2.5 with Northampton looking to have a few back. Players back could = unfitness which in turn could lead to sloppyness. Maybe im just making up my own wee universe with its own rules

Quote:
Huddersfield v Oldham
Jon Worthington and Andy Holdsworth will both return to the Huddersfield squad.

Skipper Worthington and defender Holdsworth both missed last week's defeat at Blackpool due one-match suspensions.

Midfielder Matt Young and full-back Aaron Hardy respectively are expected to make way for their more senior team-mates.

Defender Martin McIntosh missed out last week with a groin problem, but he is back in contention, as is midfielder Chris Brandon, who has missed the last three matches due to a hamstring strain.

Danny Adams sits out the last of his four-match suspension so teenager Joe Skarz could continue in defence in his absence and striker Pawel Abbott is sidelined following his recent double hernia operation.

Teenage defender Tom Clarke (knee ligaments) is out for the rest of the season.

Oldham's Simon Charlton faces a race against time to be fit to face his hometown club.

The 34-year-old defender missed last week's home win over Bradford with a hamstring strain, but is desperate to face the club where he started out his career.

Fellow defender Neil Eardley is expected to return to the squad following knee ligament damage.

The Wales Under-21 international has been sidelined since the draw with Leyton Orient in mid-October, but played the full 90 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Liverpool and could come into contention.

Midfielder Paul Edwards, who last featured in the 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest in September, played for an hour in the same match, while summer signing Moussa Dabo was also given a run out.

But Frenchman Dabo, yet to play for the Latics following his summer arrival from Racing Club Paris due to a knee injury, and Edwards are not yet ready for first-team action.
