GET ON CHESTERFIELD @ 12/1
Jack Lester top scorer @ 14/1
Promotion @ 3/1

I could reel a few off if you want for example at Barnet I wouldn’t swap Currie with Adomah. Anyway, I think you’re as strong as anyone jgb but like all the sides up there I've one or two doubts, the main one being your manager. I think you under performed last season and the pressure is on him to sort it out. Anyway you coming on saturday?

I don’t fancy the Gills at all RC. Stimson doesn’t appear to be loved that much by the fans and you seem to have had a poor pre-season. Granted Pre-season doesn’t always translate into the season but even so I don’t think you’ve got enough at the moment. I have you missing out on the playoffs, albeit only just. Good to see King doing a job for you though, top bloke, he’ll get a good welcome when he plays against us.

Welcome to TDP Super Tyke, take that Luton bet as quickly as you can as Rotherham have been docked 17 points and Bournemouth are likely to suffer a similar fate before the weekend.

I wouldn't read too much into pre-season. There were only two games where we put out a stable first choice side, and they were against strong Ipswich and Birmingham sides. Drew 1-1 v Ipswich, hit the woodwork a couple of times, arguably deserved the win, and lost 2-0 to Birmingham, but going by the posts on Fansonline, including from some of the more generally pessimistic posters, we actually played pretty well. The Stevenage and Grays games we made 11 subs at half-time, Dover was a mix of first team and reserves, and the rest of the games we won against much lower opposition.

As for the opinions on Stimson, it has to be said that Gillingham has more than its fair share of the kind of fuckwits who think changing manager every few months is the solution to all a football club's problems. Take them away (as far away as possible preferably) and although there are some who have genuine reasons for not being keen on Stimson, even they recognise that he really needs to be given time, as a very minimum until Christmas, but probably really a full season to prove whether he's up to it.

Having said all that, I agree with your prediction, I've got us down as narrowly missing the play-offs too, although I wouldn't entirely rule out us just sneaking in there, especially with Luton and Rotherham starting with hefty handicaps and Bournemouth likely to do so as well.

Bournemouth also "offered" a 17pt deduction

Unfortunately I cannot make it this season, I am stuck in deep dark Wiltshire and have a few other things to do this weekend. Should be a cracking start to the season as I think your lads look a solid proposition this year, should be an entertaining game too.

Interesting that you mention our boss, he will be in a make or break position once we know about outside investment, the rumours being that Mr Allen may make dramatic changes if/when he gets involved with the club. If that is the case I would expect him to bring a higher calibre of manager to the club.

Whenever the bookmakers price up the basement, you can generally be sure of two things.

Firstly, the team traditionally perceived as the biggest will head the market from the off. Secondly, the team that flashes the cash with the most eye-catching summer transfers will be backed in across the board to dispute favouritism on the eve of the big kick-off.

And so it has proved once again with Bradford and Shrewsbury.

The layers' stance on Bradford comes as no surprise. People will always back teams purely on the basis of five-figure attendances with little regard for the reality that big crowds are often a hindrance rather than a help.

No doubt the Bantams will make up many an ill-advised divisional accumulator this season and while 9/1 is no price for the seasoned singles punter, the Yorkshire club are not without a squeak.

Many of the 13,000 Valley Parade season ticket holders will have been disappointed by a mid-table finish, but manager Stuart McCall should be applauded for the way he steadied the ship following a third relegation in six years.

Those who ploughed into Shrewsbury at 16/1 or greater will obviously be feeling pretty pleased with themselves right now but it may require more than an open chequebook to suppress the losing mentality that was so engrained in the team Paul Simpson inherited towards the end of last season.

Indeed, there are doubts to be cast over all of the front eight market leaders, the rest of whom must overcome some kind of hangover, whether it be from relegation or play-off disappointment.

Darlington and Chesterfield finished last season in rapid decline and neither should be trusted at short prices, particularly given their tendency to melt when the pressure is on. Likewise, Wycombe generally perform best when unnoticed and they have taken a step backwards by appointing Peter Taylor in place of the departing Paul Lambert.

Meanwhile, newly-relegated Gillingham and Port Vale are still in the transitional phase of their development under new managers and although they could represent value at similar prices later in the campaign, they still have too many questions to answer right now.

In fact, Rochdale are probably the only team in the front eight to be genuinely fancied at the available prices. The Lancastrians have made enormous strides under Keith Hill and if they continue to progress then automatic promotion is the only place left for them to go.

However, we will overlook Dale for the time being, until we can be sure that they have got the disappointment of last season's heartbreaking Wembley defeat out of their system.

So it could pay to look much further down the field in search of big-price value and, as ever, the best prices are to be found in the promotion market rather than the outright betting.

For some reason, the bookies never seem to quite twig that four teams are promoted at this level, so we face the delightful prospect of picking out any of four winners from a 357 per cent book.

And once you look beyond the front eight, you suddenly begin to understand the trauma that Vanessa Feltz must face whenever she pops into her local Greggs, because it's difficult to know where to start.

One team with excellent credentials, yet instantly dismissed on the grounds that they are unfashionable is Bury.

The Shakers have an excellent and vastly underrated manager in Alan Knill and a proven 20-goal striker in Andy Bishop.

The Gigg Lane club has been awash with purpose following Knill's arrival in January, since which point his previous club, Chesterfield, where he was assistant to Lee Richardson, went into freefall. Neither outcome was any coincidence.

The addition of goalkeeper Wayne Brown ranks as one of the biggest signings of the summer and we should expect the Lancastrians to be well organised and very consistent. As such, they are worth siding with in both the outright market at a whopping 40/1 and the promotion market at 9s.

Another Lancashire club being overlooked too readily is Morecambe.

The Shrimps enjoyed an excellent first season in the Football League and would probably have clinched a play-off berth had they not become preoccupied with the instant gratification provided by the Carling Cup and the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

However, there was a 10-game spell during the league campaign when Sammy McIlroy's men were irresistible, winning eight of those matches, and the Ulsterman will be looking to replicate that form over a sustained period this term.

The loss of top scorer Carl Baker to Stockport is undoubtedly a blow but McIlroy was promoted from this division at the same stage in his fairytale journey with Macclesfield just over a decade ago and 10/1 is stonking value on him repeating the trick at Christie Park this term.

Meanwhile, Peter Jackson at Lincoln is another manager looking to replicate previous success at this level.

The self-styled 'Yorkshire Mourinho' was promoted with Huddersfield four years ago and there was plenty of evidence in the second half of last season to suggest he can repeat the feat once again with the Imps.

It speaks volumes for Jacko's charisma that he can attract the likes of Stefan Oakes and Kevin Gall to this unfashionable football outpost. Not surprisingly, the Sincil Bank faithful have all bought into the manager's vision and we should also trust his promise that this season will be, in his own words, "special".

You hear that kind of confidence from someone so experienced and it's impossible to ignore quotes of 6/1 about the Imps playing in the third tier next term.

Brentford might also be worth a stab at the slightly shorter price of 5/1.

The Bees endured a difficult return to the basement under Terry Butcher but were rejuvenated in the New Year following the appointment of Andy Scott.

The jury is still out on whether Scott is the real deal in management or not, but he certainly talks a good game and the Griffin Park dressing room possesses more than enough raw quality from which to mould a team that can challenge.

Glen Poole and Nathan Elder grabbed most of the headlines last term but it could be the signing of Marcus Bean that really catapults the Londoners into contention. Bean was a huge hit on loan at Rotherham last season and he is probably too good for this level.

Finally, we come to more of an unknown quantity in Notts County.

The Magpies have habitually struggled in recent seasons but Ian McParland has shown enough intolerance to suggest that things could be different this time around.

The former Meadow Lane stalwart has displayed a ruthless streak over the summer that has sufficiently impressed those responsible for keeping County in the Football League last season.

Veterans Michael Johnson and Russell Hoult were the men behind the clean sheets that guided County to safety in the final 12 games and they were widely expected to walk away from the club in the summer witha host of more ambitious lower league outfits to choose from.

The fact that they have both chosen to return to Meadow Lane indicates the sights are set a little higher this time around and County could be worth taking a speculative punt on at 8/1 for promotion.
