1st Premiership Manager Given the Boot

Just been looking at some of the odds on the 1st EPL manager to be given the boot:

- 8/1 Alan Curbishley, 9/1 Bryan Robson, 12/1 Paul Jewell, Mick McCarthy, Graeme Souness, 14/1 Sir Alex Ferguson, Steve McClaren, David O'Leary, 16/1 Rafa Benitez, 20/1 Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, Martin Jol, 25/1 David Moyes, Stuart Pearce, 33/1 Sam Allardyce, 40 none to go before the end of 2005/6 season, 66/1 Arsene Wenger, 100/1 Jose Mourinho.

Anyone think theres any value on Souness at 12/1??? Not sure why Alan Curbishley is so short, I guess because he would move to a bigger club. But surely that club would have to sack their manager first????

40/1 for no one to be sacked during the season. Does anyone know how many managers were sacked/moved on last time around?

I can think of Bobby Robson, Souness, Gary Megson...
Anyone else?? :think

On that matter of Curbishley,Charlton finished the season poorly with no wins in the last nine and the boo boys making themselves heard after drawing with Palace in the last game of the season.

Charlton always finish their season poorly. It's a tradition. Curbishley will only go if some other team poach him.

I agree that Souness is a very good bet at those odds.

Re: 1st Premiership Manager Given the Boot

On the subject of boo boys (probably more apt in a banter forum but here it goes) Charlton are a small club with fuck all history (OK they won the FA cup once I think) and if it wasn't for AC they'd be in the second division where they belong.

The boo boys should remember that.

Do supporters really have so short memories or is it the bandwaggon jumpers who have only joined since the good times that are booing?

No offence

If Curbishley was to go, who would he go to? Only a bigger club, perhaps a team which finished above Charlton last season?

So I guess that would narrow it down a bit

Santini left Spurs and didn't Keegan leave city voluntarily during the year?

Agree with the analysis by ODM re Curbishley. They should be thankful they got him and the only way he'll leave bar a terrible start would be to go to another club. Souness must be the value bet here iif they start the season like they finish it. Wonder what his contract is like in terms of payouts as aren't Newcastle still in litigation with Robson for about 2 Million in severances?

Oh aye, Santini and Keegan, forgot about them

I think the odds on Souness to be the first to go are gonna shorten considerably over the next few weeks, as alot of people seem to think his days are numbered.

What is Souness managerial record like anyway? He's quite a big name but Im not sure its that impressive.

Re: 1st Premiership Manager Given the Boot

Curbs has said himself that he's thought about leaving. Is it definately first manager to get SACKED or first to LEAVE? He might step down and take time away before coming back for a fresh challenge, especially if Charlton start poorly.

There's no way jose or Arsene will get sacked, the promoted clubs have all done a good job (in the eyes of the chairmen, according to various intervies I've seen over recent months) and as Souness has just forked out 7 million on Parker, you'd think they'd give him some time. Why let him spend money and then boot him? I just honestly can't see any of them going - it'd have to be something daft like ManUre being in the bottom 5 at Christmas so they sacke Fergie. [Please note this is different than me saying "I think noone will be sacked" - there's always a couple at least]

This is just too difficult to call.

Not that bad. Did well at Rangers (couple of league titles and 4 cups I believe) and won the FA Cup at Liverpool in 92. Done little since, to be honest - pissed about at Southampton and abroad. Won the League Cup with Blackburn I think.

Re: 1st Premiership Manager Given the Boot

Souness i think isnt that great a bet like you's think. He came in last season into a team already with its problems from the Robson era. He has to work with this team and didnt get much transfer opportunities.

If you think of it now - its a good time for Newcastle fans. He's disposing of all the rift raft and trouble makers such as Griffin, O Brien, Robert, Bellamy, Bowyer.

Also made a shrewd signing in Parker already. All he needs is a centre back, wingers and a striker and they have a fairly decent squad. I think they could be a top 6 team next season - only if they get the rest of their signings right. I fancy taking them to win the league with the points handicap.

Ladbrokes seem to think its just between the first 3 in their market by the looks of it Swoops. Could take their 14/1 on McCarthy and the others prices on the rest and maybe show some profit.

Re: 1st Premiership Manager Given the Boot

Sunderland are just there for the money this time round I reckon Komp, & I think theres no one better than McCarthy to bring them back up the 2nd time...& who would take the job anyway ??
Perrin yes I can see, & i think its him or Coleman. Perrin just isnt going to adapt quick enough I dont think, theres something like 17 nationalities there & I dont see them being the home force they were which is what kept them up. You could see the Gills exit on the cards because they couldnt adapt to the passion IMO.
Owens goals will keep Souness in for long enough to get past the other 2, & I just dont buy that you give a bloke 17 million to spend & sack him 6 weeks later.
Coleman i like, & I think he'll do ok elsewhere, but I thought he'd go before now because lets face it, Al Fayeds cuckoo & nowt else hes mad, theres no logic to him. He still contests Tiganas bonus when he left 3 years ago (how long ?? ) & that Dodi/Diana statue/ette is just bizarre.......would you feel safe working under him ?? The keepers gone & the decent players of the last 3 years are eiother too old or just losing it.

9/1 is massive compared to the other 2 IMO

Re: 1st Premiership Manager Given the Boot

Cant say I take much interest in this market, but if I was picking 2, it would be Moyes and McCarthy.
