Re: 8/9th Jan: Carling Cup Semi's

Quote:
Chelsea are unbeaten in six games since they lost to Arsenal in the league but a closer look at their form suggests they are no good things to beat Everton in the Carling Cup semi-final first-leg at prices as short as 8/13.

Since that 1-0 reverse at the Emirates, Chelsea have drawn 4-4 with Aston Villa, beaten the out-of-sorts Newcastle with a late goal from Salomon Kalou, edged Fulham 2-1 thanks to a Michael Ballack penalty and then struggled to beat QPR in the FA Cup.

The spine of Chelsea - John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba -are all still missing and that seriously dents any confidence in the Blues at such skinny prices.

Drogba returned against the Championship side on Saturday but he won't be available for the Everton game due to his Ivory Coast commitments.

Also missing are Andriy Shevchenko (leg), Florent Malouda (knee), Carlo Cudicini (rib), Michael Essien and Kalou (both on International duty).

Everton, who went on a 13-game unbeaten run following their unlucky 2-1 loss to Liverpool in October, have lost a little momentum recently after defeats in three of their last five matches.

Manchester United ended their unbeaten run and since then they have lost home games against Arsenal and Oldham.

That last reverse on Saturday was particularly disappointing, but Tim Howard, Tim Cahill, Nuno Valente and Phil Neville all missed the defeat and are expected to return on Tuesday.

There would be no better way to appease the fans than getting a result at Stamford Bridge and we fancy them to do just that.

David Moyes' team got a point at Chelsea in the league earlier in the campaign courtesy of a late Cahill strike and at 5/2 they are not a bad bet to repeat the trick.

The 4/1 available about an Everton win doesn't really appeal given they are missing key playmaker Mikel Arteta, but they are more than capable of holding out for a draw against a Chelsea side missing many of their star players.

Re: 8/9th Jan: Carling Cup Semi's

Chelsea-Everton: Tuesday 8th January

The FA Cup proved a major let down for David Moyes and his admittedly weakened Everton squad. Their early exit was most definitely not part of that club's plans, and losing out to Oldham 1-0?!... most, most, most definitely NOT part of the plan. Everton were not the only Premiership side to suffer an early exit, but they were the biggest name. Poor displays were seen all over the country and indeed this was probably one of the poorest 3rd Round performances by EPL sides in many a year.
With only three days to recover and get the minds of his players straightened out for this Carling Cup semi-final vs Chelsea, the question is whether he/they can do it.

A big blow is that Stephen Pienaar won't be available due to his being called up by the South African national side. He's played a big part in the recent surge in the Goodison Park squad's form. Very quick feet and excellent movement in the build ups he's involved in, make for a key element that you really don't want to have to replace at this stage. With Arteta suspended and Osman out injured Moyes will be looking for Cahill to be 110%, despite the knock he's been carrying. Yobo and Yakubu will play in this 1st leg, as their national side (Nigeria) allowed them to stay on, but all African players will be away for the 2nd Leg on Jan 23rd, so you'd think Moyes will be wanting to really make a move here.

Chelsea really stumbled past a very competitive QPR side in the FA Cup, and 1-0 meant it was nervy all the way to the whistle. I find myself continually backing for a Chelsea bombshell performance, and even though betting against them on the Asian Handicap was again a good source of profit, I just feel that a 90min defeat is not far away....however, they keep proving me wrong on that last count.
Facing an Everton side that will have bruised egos, and a lot of club pride to recover, should be a tough match, but with the Toffeemen having won only twice in 22 meetings with the London club, it doesn't bode well for a third here.

They met in the Cup before back in season 2005/06 with the 1st leg a 1-1 draw followed by a resounding 4-1 win for Chelsea in the 2nd. Moyes will recall his rested 1st team players, so we should expect a solid performance. Avram Grant has stated that he sees Drogba being called up by his country, but not Mikel John Obi, who's starting if Everton's Yobo and Yakubu are for Moyes.

Everton will know how important it will be to get a solid result here with Goodsion waiting for the return on Jan 23rd. Chelsea took a draw back to Stamford Bridge back in '05/06 , and I think Moyes will be very happy with that for his side.

Everton +0.50 @ 2.13 canbet / Draw 1-1 @ 7.00 bluesq / T.Cahill to score with a Header @ 15.00 ladbrokes

Arsenal-Tottenham Hotspur: Wednesday 9th January

At least Arsenal managed to enter the draw for the next round of the FA Cup as winners, unlike Spurs who will have to meet Reading again. Considering that Steve Coppell sent out his usual '2nd team for the Cup matches!' it was a bit of surprise to see them force a full-strength Spurs into a replay.

Berbatov did his job and scored two, while the same couldn't be said of Robbie Keane: he had a rotten time. Poor finishing on clear-cut chances cost his side dear.
A below-par performance from keeper Paul Robinson again provided many with an after match topic for debate.
Now they head to The Emirates to contest this semi-final against another 2nd team, so will this be preying on their minds? Wouldn't surprise me.

Ramos needs a good Cup run to make this season more memorable than just a few 'high scoring-suicidal defending' matches. Progress has been a case of slow slow quick quick slow, but with a golden opportunity to push his players into a Cup Final after such a dismal opening run of games... well, that has to be a grabbed with both hands. Just hope it's not Paul Robinson's.

Arsenal's so called 'young guns' should really be seen for what they are...a true Premiership side. There is no 2nd string about this lot. You have quality all across the pitch, and with Wenger clearly happy with their play, you are guaranteed they'll be kept together as a team, allowing better consistency and understanding to develop. The average age of the FA Cup side was 23...what a future.

Paper talk is about Ramos looking to lure Chelsea's Ben Haim over to White Hart Lane....madness! That's not going to solve anything for Spurs. He's got less pace than a snail going backwards. That defence needs true quality to shore it up, real experience, and not just for the short term but for the future hopes of the club. No point in spending $10-15m on a player that patently can't cope at a bigger club than yours!

Got to feel this will be a make or break semi-final for Spurs...they get to the final and a season can be salvaged, but lose out and their efforts to get here will be forgotten quicker than Chelsea cashing Ben Haim's transfer cheque.

Both sides possess top quality strikers , but only one has a true and tested defence. Home advantage is a big factor when Arsenal are playing, while Spurs may feel a bit under pressure after a disappointing FA Cup result.
Youth vs Desperation?......Penalty!!

Cant see past a Chelsea win especially with the loss of Arteta who always is at the heart of anything good they create. Getting 10/11 in the local for Chelsea which i think is a cracking price.

Not saying they'll win but that is a very very good price - especially if you compare it to the 4/7 available to me in the local shop (lads)

Re: 8/9th Jan: Carling Cup Semi's

Agree with komp about fasteddy's top stuff.
Tempting preview, indeed.

As I believe this game will hardly go over 2,5 goals I'm thinking to split the unders into two more valuable bets and keeping the stake low.

My first idea is backing the draw at around 3,30 and "covering" it with 1 goal (bet on exact number of goals) at around 4,40 (both these odds are available at Stanleybet).

A narrow home win (or maybe away??) is possible here and I think the side who eventually managed to score first would settle to hold the lead without pushing too much for a second.

Anyway need to think a little more about it!

Re: 8/9th Jan: Carling Cup Semi's

GUTTED!!!!..absolutely GUTTED!...what a f**k up......counting the cash, and then bang..OG......even more annoying was that I had both games as 'red cards' in my original previews but pulled out of Chelsea's one at the death. Reason being that the African nations players may feel a bit more like getting stuck in as they're off after the match....and Mikel has a track record.

Again Chelsea seem to be my Nemesis!!...But I'm sticking with my plan...they're heading for a fall and hopefully I'll be there to collect BIG TIME!

Sorry for your bets going down lads....had it as well...I could feel it!!

On with Arsenal then...

Re: 8/9th Jan: Carling Cup Semi's

Lastnite, while seen your preview on the Chelsea game, i became doubt on my analysis. I see Everton no value at all. No S. Pienaar and M.Arteta are big lost for Evertonian. Thats why i still stick on my bet for Chelsea. And thanks God, they won on a very last minute !
Thus i reduce my bet on them, coz see your preview but anyway you still one of the best tipster.

After lucky win on Chelsea, tonite I have my analysis on Arsenal. 5 points for me to bet on Arsenal tonite ! These are the points :

1. Tottenham with poor records on travel ( 1-5-5) while meet Arsenal master at home.

2. Tottenham big lost on D. Zokora and Tom Huddlestone. While P.Robinson and P.Chimbonda
on transfer list, this could make big impact on the team mental.
Arsenal with the young guns best striker (imo) Eduardo in front with the Prince "Robbie
Van Persie". Midfielder no problem at all as i see Denilson,Diaby and Gilberto collaborate
can make problem on Spurs Defence.
Robinson will be replace imo, coz Ramos didn't truce him anymore.

3. Hotspur always lost against Arsenal, this case similiar with Aston and Manu.

4. Ramos decide to put strong lineup without change on the first eleven. Did u know ? their
first eleven play the game twice in a week without break ? Wenger more clever, with many
youngster on his squad. He made rotation, and some of them become starlet now. Look at
Eduardo and Denilson. The NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK !

5. The Prince Come Back ! " Robbie Van Persie" The Prince come back from injured.
I Believe he can score again, as i see this player is a good luck charm for Arsenal.

ON ARSENAL, BIG BET TONITE........

Re: 8/9th Jan: Carling Cup Semi's

Agree on the call for Arsenal. Morale might not be as it should at White Hart Lane but things will improve but as this is away from home.... Arsenal for me.

Young guns will relish this imo and it could well be a heated encounter. Not that I'll be backing red cards or bookings but agree with eddy (and others) but it should be good.

I think Spurs will be happy going home with a draw but like last night I think the home team will have the hungrier bite.

Arsenal for me

Re: 8/9th Jan: Carling Cup Semi's

I too fancy the gooners may place a small bet on the 2-2 draw as cover. This game will definitely finish overs and probably end up with Gunners win either 2-1 or 3-1. Personally think he will start with Eduardo and one of Bentnder an RVP. Will bbe placing a bet on Eduardo to score anytime as well. Arsenal have the V sign over Spurs and cant see this changing tonight. Spurs will score but at the end of the day Arsenal will score more so home win for me and then a draw at the lane in two weeks see's Arsenal through to meet you guessed it Chelsea in another dull final !!!

Re: 8/9th Jan: Carling Cup Semi's

Carling Cup

Real bet (1.15 units to win 2.5):

Soccer - Draw (Arsenal vs Tottenham) - moneyline (+220)
for the regulation time held on Jan 9 at 2:45pm [pending]

Cover bet (1 unit to win 1.15):

Soccer - Arsenal - spread -½ (+115)
for the regulation time held on Jan 9 at 2:45pm [pending]

Arsenal will play a mix of youngsters as usual in these cups...but they play very well doing this (don't think of it as a second team) and they own Tottenham. On the other hand, the Spurs have played very well since sacking their manager and are now mid-table, and they have the firepower to be competitive...I went back and forth between taking the Arsenal win and covering with the draw, and taking the draw and covering with the Arsenal win...whichever. I don't think the Gunners will lose at home...I'm taking the better-priced draw for the sake of value and out of respect for Tottenham's good form over the past couple of months.

BOL

2008 soccer update:

2-6, -1.75 units
(that's what happens when you win your big bets and lose your little bets)
