Heavier Than Heaven

Read quite a few books at work , but ive never really bothered with biographys , especailly ones about music folk.

Picked this up in HMV ( 2.99 ) ...The other day Heavier Than Heaven.
Its the biography of Kurt Cobain ( he of Nirvana )
Well ive just got past half way and its a great read , i suppose it helps being a fan of Nirvana.
Synopsis
Alongside the death of Elvis Presley and the assassination of John Lennon, Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994 ranks as one of the generational milestones of American life - an epochal event in both rock 'n' roll and youth culture. This book is the story of Kurt Cobain's life, from abject poverty to unbelievable wealth, power and fame. It traces the journey from his humble origins in Aberdeen to becoming lead singer of Nirvana, the most popular rock band in the world from 1991 to 1994, and the most influential band of this decade. The beautifully written text is complimented by 16 pages of photographs. Based on over one hundred interviews, Charley Cross allows us to understand Kurt Cobain's personality. This is an incredible tale of a strange, tortured and very talented man.

Certainly tortured , what a bloody family he came from , three of his fathers brothers committed suicide ( insert joke about Nirvanas music )...His mother was a raving nut job....well i wont say much more , i,ll give all the good bits away......Anyway....2.99 well worth it in my opinion...

Re: Heavier Than Heaven

Aberdeen???

Must be the Aberdeen of America surely??

Im starting to really love the autobiographies these days of all, sports stars, musicians etc.

Some of them are great reads. If im about HMV i might have a look out for it as its bound to be worth the price.

Kiko, I'd reccomend you buy 'The Dirt.'
It's the story of Motley Crue, told by the band themselves - their music is a bit crappy but the story is a great read, imo.

Cheers mate.

Always found Motley Members to be a good laugh in interviews and always had some mad stories about groupies etc.

Neverliked their music though. I liked that camera they had named the boobie camera where they just filled it with footage of women flashing there tits.

My birthday in a couple of weeks so i might add these two books to my wishlist.

Re: Heavier Than Heaven

Motley were just playing at being bad boys....

Check out " Hammer of the Gods " ...Led Zep bio.

Synopsis
If ever there were Satanic Majesties of rock their name was Led Zeppelin. The band that out-sold the Rolling Stones and made Robert Johnson's deals with the Devil look like a playground game of conkers were as high, inflated and glorified as their namesake. in Stephen Davis's scorching account of their phenomenally successful career, no aspect - however disquieting - is ignored. The infamous encounters with willing groupies in hotel bedrooms, the narcotic, alcoholic and psychotic wreckage they wreaked, the disturbing influence of the notorious mage, Aleister Crowley, on lead guitarist Jimmy Page and the death of John Bonham are all recorded. Above all, the exultant, blazing charge of their music and its effects on Led Zeppelin and their fans is scrutinized. Hammer of the Gods is a fierce and fearless story about a band that remain a legend of musical, sexual and mystical power. It is the last word in rock 'n' roll savagery. 'The biggest surprise success of the year... the Led Zep tale, drenched in sex, drugs and psychic abuse, demonstrated the validity of all the old adages about talent, power and corruption. Stephen Davis's grimy homage to imperial excess and demonic influence had fans slavering for more' Rolling Stone

Re: Heavier Than Heaven

Well i finished the Kurt Cobain book last night at work.

What did i think of it ?

Well , its one of the saddest books ive ever read
Great read , but a tragic story , yes i know he killed himself and most folk think this is the cowards way out , but when you read what a mixed up bloke he was you sort of understand where it all went wrong.

Wanted fame from an early age and when Nirvana became one of the biggest bands in the world he just wanted to go back to living in his car like the old days.
Strange set up when you read about his family life , dont want to say to much as folk might buy it ( 2.99 HMV ) .....gotta give it 9/10...

  • Was just thinking there, the best type of "fuck off " is the following; You`re playing astro, 5 a side, someone shouts "handball" and the "fuck off" response is fucking class.
