Every Second Counts
I've just finished reading Lance Armstrong's latest book.
Let me say first that I'm a huge admirer of what he's done in the Tour and the illness he's had to overcome in achieving it.
However, the book, aside from a decent account of the pains of a 3 week stage race, was not only poorly written but made me think more about the things he didn't say rather than what he did.
He wants everybody to be his friend and indeed they are according to Lance (with one or two notable exceptions) but I got the feeling that he was painting a picture of the Lance he wanted us to see and a voice kept repeating itself inside my head "he's left something out".
To be a seven time tour de France winner demands not only extreme cycling attributes but also a ruthlessness that Lance seems to go to great pains to hide and that makes me wonder what else he's hiding.
The French have dragged out this EPO case from 1999 and refused to give him the all-clear which makes his antagonism understandable. I have sympathy and I sincerely hope that he is finally exonerated for anything else will destroy his successes and make his 7 race wins worthless.
