The Island

Went and saw this yeaterday. It seems at times that Hollywood is berift of ideas and this film struck me as a cross between "The Matrix" and "The Truman show". Also it echoed themes from a golden oldie "Logans Run".

I can't really describe too much of the plot without inadvertingly spoiling parts of the film. I was pleased after playing OB1 Macgregor has gone back to acting. It's not his best performance but I thought he did a good job. I've never seen Scarlett Johansson before but Ewan's co-star has a "big future in front of her" shall we say... Clad in tight fitting attire through out she gives as good a reason to see the film as any. I thought the best characer / actor of the movie was Djimon Hounsou playing the mercenary called in to clean up the mess.

Overall I'd give the film 6.5 out of 10. If you're looking to fill two and a half hours they'd probably be worse ways of doing so. I always enjoy watching Shaun Bean as he's worked his way up to be at the top and is an ardent football fan. Whilst the concept blatantly plagiarize's other movies it is quite watchable. In this day and age it's difficult to be impressed by stunts but I thought some of them after they "escaped" were really good.

Not one that I'd consider owning on DVD but then again I won't be asking for my money back either.

Anyone else seen it?

Quote:
Lincoln Six-Echo (McGregor) is a resident of a seemingly utopian but contained facility in the mid 21st century. Like all of the inhabitants of this carefully controlled environment, Lincoln hopes to be chosen to go to the "The Island" - reportedly the last uncontaminated spot on the planet. But Lincoln soon discovers that everything about his existence is a lie. He and all of the other inhabitants of the facility are actually human clones whose only purpose is to provide "spare parts" for their original human counterparts. Realizing it is only a matter of time before he is "harvested," Lincoln makes a daring escape with a beautiful fellow resident named Jordan Two-Delta (Johansson). Relentlessly pursued by the forces of the sinister institute that once housed them, Lincoln and Jordan engage in a race for their lives to literally meet their makers.

Re: The Island

Cheers Komp for posting that.

I was on the empire site and thought about posting a plot synopsis but all I went into this movie knowing nothing about the plot apart from it was a futuristic-type sci-fi film,

The trailer I saw reminded me off Logan's run - a film from the early seventies I saw many years ago and enjoyed.

i've just checked the overview out and I remembered right, it is very similar to The Island:

It is 2274. Some type of holocaust has decimated the earth, and the survivors sealed themselves into a domed city near Washington, D.C. To maintain the population balance, the computers that run the city have decreed that all people must die at 30. This system is enforced by "sandmen" : black-clad police operatives who terminate (kill) "runners" (those who attempt to live beyond 30). Logan, a sandman, is sent on a mission to find "sanctuary," which is a code- word used by the master computer to describe what it believes is a place to which runners have been escaping. Logan begins to question the system he serves and after seeing for himself that there is life beyond the dome, he returns to destroy the computer.

So like you say Komp, unless your a Sci-Fi fan than maybe "The Island" wouldn't be the film for you...

Re: The Island

Island - a great book by Richard Laymon which I enjoyed immensely. Available for as little as £1.20 from Amazon (see the search box top of this forum.)

Anyways, The Island sounds like my kind of thing. I'm gonna go check out some reviews.
