As I've been trying to warn Komp all week. It only takes one wrong click when you're laying horses and it's bye bye

I don't really understand all the ins and outs of laying but i clicked on it once on Betfair when I was betting. Once it told me if I lost I'd lose hundreds for my £2 bet I though feck that. Never been near it since.

Laying a horse @ 125?
Only small boys using dad's credit card, surely?

125/1 was the SP, so only the bookies laid that price Peter.

Those on Betfair laid it at much bigger - it was around 400 pre-race if I remember correctly, and went to 999/1 in-running when it looked to have no chance.

A perilous pastime indeed, especially with the infamous various broadcasting delays and dodgy camera angles.

Seen,
I don't back the horses, simply because I know f*ck all about 'em but I have been onto one of the punting sites where Willaim Hill, (I think) did a commentary on the race.
They were around 35-40 seconds behind the actual event.

My point is ..er I'm not sure what my point is really aside from a lack of sympathy for one who lays a horse at that price and a refusal to believe it's someone seriously keen on staking plans.

I'm not quite sure why this is such news when 1.01 shots get beat so regular without much of an eyebrow being raised. I suppose the thing is the horse traded at 400/1 on betfair and as it is such headline news you would have to think there were at least 400 other instances where horses of a similar price didnt win making the odds fair value.

Think, from the report, it was actually out to the max (999-1) on Betfair Oddsfellow. And another was matched at the same price 20 mins later (after going off 2-5!).

I hear what you say about fair prices etc but even given that I can't get my head round the lay £2000 to win £2 merchants who do obviously bet in this way on a regular basis. I just think of £2000 sitting on my desk at one hand, all in nice £10 notes and then a £2 coin at the other hand and think "Do I really want to risk this big pile of notes to win this coin??"

On the subject of if being a fair price, I don't actually think the layers are judging whether the price is fair or not, I think they are just laying up the "no hopers". I mean realistically how can you judge, in the middle of a race, in running, what is a fair price for each horse? Your talking, in some cases of flat races anyway, having seconds to make that judgement. I don't think thats long enough to do so accurately.

Abbots Habit was sent off 2-5 favourite at Ayr, but drifted to 1,000-1 in running during the race when he looked certain to be beaten.

One lucky punter had £3 on the horse, and he got up in the final stride to beat Dantor by a short head.

I had a spare 5 minutes around the time of this race and came in and backed Dantor @ 60 on Betfair

Re: A bad day for some layers on betfair.

Its bound to happen every now and again and for anybody laying at that price must expect it as theres no such thing as easy money.

I had a system once which i proofed to myself over 6 months and and never bagged a winner which i wanted as i was laying, when i put it into practise the first one that came up was a 23/1 shot , way and above the highest odds it had ever produced but because i had told myself i was gonna go along with it no matter what the odds i layed it.

Like a bastard it romped home and nearly cleared me out and i bottled it and sacked the system, i would have actually made a profit on the day if i had kept to the system but ddint have the balls to go through with it.
Its part and parcel of betting and something that you have to take on the chin and learn from if your ever going to make money from gambling.

Re: A bad day for some layers on betfair.

With outsiders i always think its not worthing backing before the start (unless they are front runners) as invariably bigger prices are available at some point in the race.

Crowie i dont know how they price it up either, i thought i had an idea once. However when i see a horse in a 3m chase 1.05 before the last fence is even jumped with the second no more than 5 lengths back then i realise i haven't got a clue.
