Punters have been quick to latch on to the progressive staying four year olds Highland Legacy and Double Banded at the foot of the weights for the totesport.com Chester Cup.
It is hard to argue to be fair as they have plenty going for them.

Both represent big stables, come here on the back of winning performances, have top jockeys booked and are decently drawn.

It will be a toss-up who goes off favourite but both will have to make more progress against some tough stayers in what is a fairly unique test of speed and stamina.

Last year's winner Greenwich Meantime holds sound claims again off a one-pound higher mark but trainer Richard Fahey said he wishes he had got 10 more days to prepare.

I have plenty of respect for Black Rock as trainer Michael Jarvis produced the gallant Anak Pekan to win back-to-back runnings of the race in recent seasons.

However, the son of Rock Of Gibraltar is not really bred for this extreme test and his handler was talking more in terms of him being most effective up to two miles this season.
At the prices, I suggest siding with Mick Channon's Som Tala at 20/1 with Ladbrokes.

Fifth in this 12 months ago, he strictly has it to do at the weights with Greenwich Meantime but could be considered a bit better than the bare result as he was hampered on more than one occasion.

He relishes this sort of trip, had a sighter on the all-weather last month (beaten favourite) and Frankie Dettori has emerged at the 11th hour for the ride in place of Tadgh O'Shea.

In the minus column, he doesn't win too often and Dettori is going to have to weave some magic at some stage from his draw in 13 but the price on offer at Laddies is out of line and worth an interest for sure.
